Programme description
Geographic Information Systems (GIS) is a computer powered tool for collecting, storing, analyzing, managing, and visualizing geographic information. By linking data to maps, GIS enables users to interpret spatial patterns, relationships, and trends, supporting informed decision making in sectors such as agriculture, conservation, urban planning, infrastructure development, disaster management, and natural resource management. Remote Sensing (RS) is the science and technology of acquiring information about the Earth's surface or other objects without direct physical contact. Using sensors mounted on satellites, aircraft, drones, or ground based platforms, RS detects and measures electromagnetic radiation (visible light, infrared, or radar signals) reflected or emitted from targets. Together, RS and GIS complement each other RS acts as the "eye" capturing spatial data, while GIS serves as the "brain" processing, analyzing, and transforming these data into actionable insights. The Bachelor of Science in Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and Remote Sensing is a practical and highly relevant program designed to train students in acquiring, analyzing, and interpreting spatial data to address real world geographic and environmental challenges. By integrating principles from geography, earth sciences, and computer science, the program equips graduates with the skills to apply GIS and remote sensing tools in planning, resource management, environmental monitoring, disaster risk assessment, and sustainable development initiatives. In Tanzania and beyond, these skills are critical for evidence based decision making, supporting national development goals, promoting efficient resource use, and enabling data driven solutions to complex environmental and societal challenges.
